Donegal Town Basketball Club U-14s
This coming weekend Donegal Town BC U-14 Boys take to the road and head to Gormanston, Co Meath to represent County Donegal and the North West Region for the All Ireland Club Championships.
This is a fantastic honour for the club and a first outing to the prestigious event for this group. We have struggled to get boys teams away at this level for an age indeed it was Coach Kennedy who was last to take a DTBC team to winning the Region at U-14 or U-16 as thats the ages that a Regional win means going to the All-Irelands. John’s son Dylan and his stat man Oisin Gillespie were part of that team almost seven years ago.
Our lads have got there courtesy of winning the Region on the last day with a winners takes all game against Sligo All Stars which they won 56-34 to win the League.
The Super Cup final came next and again DTBC dispatched All Stars to take all the silverware on offer in the Region for the season. Further success came last week for the group as they won their Schools Regional title meaning they also reach the Schools All-Ireland play-offs, a sure sign boys basketball in the club and school are on the way up.
The team is coached by John Kennedy, one of Donegal's most decorated Basketball coaches, and his wealth of experience is a real bonus to these lads starting out on their basketball journey’s.
John has coached all the grades in the club as well as taking plenty of Titles into Colaiste Cholmcille over the years and the improvement on this group the last season has been fantastic to watch under Johns expert guidance.
He is backed up by Assistant Coach and team Manager Garry Prendiville who has been a trojan worker since joining the club a few season’s back. Indeed Garry has been with this group winning Regional titles at U-12 along with fellow coach Paul McHugh which has sent these lads into u14s really ready to compete.
Oisin Gillespie is a welcome sight around the club as we have put loads of lads through our system with very few coming back to lend a hand but Oisin has and fair play to him it’s much appreciated by the club and hopefully more lads of his generation put their hands up to help the club keep moving forward.
Our lads will play in the B Division courtesy of some strong finishes by our u16 girls teams the last two seasons at the Aiccs. With our opposition not known at the time of writing its safe to say we will have some serious challenges ahead and we wouldn't have it any other way. The Team is captained by the talented Niall Prendiville and he has shown not just great basketball skills over the season but fantastic leadership skills and being the go to man for scores when needed at vital times.
Jake Graham and Daniel Quinn are the backbone of the side providing a wealth of rebounds and loads of ball for the likes of Jonathan O’Driscoll, Oisin Mogan, Shea Byrne and the impressive Leo McGowan to work with. With a great panel all the lads listed below will play their part this weekend.
At a cost of over €3000 to send the team away this weekend we thank all those that bought lines and supported our fundraising quiz last Friday. It's fantastic to see the local community get behind the club and the team.
The team leave Friday evening and will overnight stay in Gormanstown and be ready for action Saturday morning and returning after a great weekends basketball on Sunday evening. Best of luck from us all to John Garry, Oisin and the lads from all at DTBC.
We have a lot of parents, friends and club members heading down to show their support over the weekend led by club Chair Martin Carr and Secretary Martina Ryan so show your club colours and make plenty of noise for the lads.
Lastly we’d really like to congratulate two Donegal Clubs on their fantastic showing at the u14 Girls Aicc’s last weekend as Blaze and Mulroy both won their grades taking two All-Ireland titles back to Donegal. Fantastic achievement and congratulations to both Mulroy Hoops and Letterkenny Blaze. Donegal Basketball is a once again on the up. Can we join them this weekend? Let’s hope so….
