Donegal lose out to Down in All-Ireland final of Indoor Bowls

Donegal Ladies met West Down Ladies in the final of the Cup on Saturday in Killyclogher. Whilst Donegal were hopeful of a favourable result, many left their best game in the county instead of taking it on the bus. The “never say die attitude” of West Down when they went behind meant that the team returned disappointed and empty handed.

The game started well for Donegal who were a shot to the good after five ends and were nine shots ahead after eight ends. However, they imploded over the last two ends and found themselves going into the interval behind by 33 shots to 31 shots

On mat one, Ann Watson, Geraldine Robinson, Donna Hegarty and Ruth Crawford finished with a win of ten shots to six shots against A Burrell. P Linden, V Leckie and A Cannaway. On mat two, Dorothy Montgomery, Lisa O’Kane, Margaret Montgomery and Martina Brogan had a good victory over M Adair, B Wilson, L Reaney and C Wilson, winning by sixteen shots to ten shots. Mat three saw Mary McClintock, Barbara Aicken, Sylvia Bell and Kathleen Duggan struggled against J Donaldson, K McCartney, E Robb and B Hanratty, going down seventeen shots to five shots.

After the interval, Donegal started steadily and after five ends the teams were level at 46 shots all. However, when West Down posted four shots without reply in the sixth ends, Donegal were unable to recover and went down by 58-54.

Phyllis Lyttle, Lila Finlay, Pearl Bustard and Vera Patterson drew eight shots all with D Johnston, P Hayes, H Steenson and B Conlon. Ann Hume, Arlene Robinson, Audrey Gilfillan and Paula Friel had an eight shots to seven shots win. Rae McCausland, Jean Buchanan, Vanessa McHugh and Rachel McDonnell were beaten by A Mooney, L Byrne, L Martin and A Polin by ten shots to seven shots.

Many thanks to Mid Tyrone and Killyclogher for hosting the Final. Tea and scones on arrival and a magnificent spread at the interval.
