Donegal Clay Target championships
The milder weather of last weekend meant that the previously postponed Donegal County Championships in the disciplines of "Double-Rise" and "All Rounder" were able to go ahead at Mulroy Shooting Grounds. John Diver and his dedicated team of workers were out early making the grounds accessible and setting the targets for the day's competitions. Gordon Roulston from Kilmacrennan had a good day as he won both County titles and added some worthwhile points to his tally in the race for this year's Donegal Sportstar award. Gilbert Hall from Carrigart has won County titles in the past and on this occasion he pushed Roulston all the way in the "Doubles" contest finishing second with only a point between the shooters. David Roulston from Ramelton came third in this event. The "All-Rounder" added the Skeet and Sporting disciplines into the equation along with the "Trap" code. Roulston again came out on top but this time his closest rival was his namesake David thirteen points adrift and Martin Crossan also from Kilmacrennan was third a further ten points back.
All in all it was another enjoyable and successful days sport at the Milford venue which hosts numerous registered shoots throughout the year as well as local and County championships. The Donegal shooting calendar for 2011 will be compiled shortly as we look forward to another successful season for Donegal shooters.
This weekend kicks off Sportshall activity with the Rosses AC putting all their athletes into contention for the county teams with trials in all disciplines on Saturday (tomorrow) 15th at the Rosses community school. Whiles many U/13 and U/15 athletes are bound for Tullamore and the final cross country national finals this weekend. Louise Gillespie and Sean McGinley invite any other club members not going to Tullamore to avail of these trials.
Then on Sunday 23rd January Abbey VOC school Donegal town will host another session of trials at 12.00 noon. This is another opportunity for the talented young athletes of the county to make their pitch for county selection. Finally and acknowledging that Inishowen athletes have made a contribution in recent years by gaining selection, a trial for all athletes U/13 and U/15 (31st September 2010) from Inishowen and indeed any club will take place in Carndonagh VOC school (Monday 24th January 7pm).
Hopefully then four teams will be selected to progress through to the west Ulster final in Enniskillen (Thursday 3rd February) and the Ulster final in Magherafelt (Thursday 10th March). So ensuring another trip to Birmingham and the Aviva Finals.
