Magees out of luck

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for the Magee brother and sister pair of Chloe and Sam from Raphoe at the Irish International Championships in Dublin.

After winning their opening round games in both the mixed double and the ladies singles Chloe and Sam bowed out at the semi-final stage.

Chloe and Sam led the Irish challenge at the championship which attracted all the top badminton players from around Europe.

They got the show on the road on when they came from one set behind to overcome the fancied English pair of Heather Oliver and Robin Middleton. After losing the first set 23-25, they stormed back to take the next two 21-15 and 21-15 to book their place in the semi-final.

However, in the semi-final they found the Danish pair of Christian Skovgaard and Britta Andersen too hot to handle and lost in two straight sets, their hard fought quarter-final victory over the British pair obviously taking its toll.

In the women's singles Chloe turned in possibly one of her best performances ever in an Ireland vest to defeat the number one seed and English number one Elizabeth Cann, before losing in the semi-final to Karina Jorgensen from Denmark.

Meawnhile, Sam Magee and his doubles partner Tony Stephenson bowed out of the men's doubles in the second round.

It proved a good tournament for Joshua Magee and Daniel Magee who had their first outing at senior level.
