Letterkenny Ladies

The ladies enjoyed a fine autumnal day for playing the September pendant on Tuesday 4th. As the season draws to a close there wasn’t as large an entry as in previous competitions but that in no way took away from the standard of golf played. In fact it was all low handicap players who took the honours the winner being Anne Cannon scoring a very impressive 70 net. Next to Anne it was Veronica McAteer 73 net and Lady Vice Captain Angela Bradley was 3rd with 74 net.

The Letterkenny Chamber Classic was played on Friday 7th and winners from amongst the ladies included Kate Gallagher on the Brian McCormick Sports Team which came 2nd overall and Celine Bradley on the Bank of Ireland team won the longest drive for the ladies and Marian O Sullivan on the Magees Pharmacy team won the nearest the pin prize.

The Mary McDaid Cup was won by Portsalon, the Letterkenny team came second.

The ladies Past Captains Prize was played on Sunday 9th and by all accounts everyone enjoyed a lovely day. There was a tea and coffee reception followed by the golf and then a lovely meal in the evening. Everyone commented on the beautiful prizes and as far as I can see from the photos it was a very glamorous occasion.

Kay Kelly won with a very solid 36pts., Anne Condon was 2nd on 35pts. and Mary Murray was 3rd with 34pts. Celine Bradley and Nellie McHugh won the 9s.

Best of luck to Sandra McMonagle Captain of the Maire O Donnell team who travel to Murvagh on Sunday 16th for the first leg of the final of this competition. Sandra has a very strong selection and the ladies branch wish them all the best.

There will be Club competitions on 18th and 25th and the first Hamper Competition will be on the 23rd and there will be a draw for this.

Ballybofey and Stranorlar

Derry man Damien MCKenna picked up the B&S Senior (36 hole) Scratch Cup on Saturday last and went out the next day and won the Foyle Scratch Cup. I have to say, that is some accomplishment. Damien, a +1 handicapper, had two fantastic round on Saturday to narrowly beat a good friend of his Stephen Martin on the second play-off hole. Both guys finished the 36 holes on 138 and the two proceeded down the 37th with pars each and McKenna eventually beat his travelling companion on the 2nd play off hole. Normally two rounds of golf would be enough for any one but not Damien as he headed to Foyle GC the next day and the rest is history. A great weekend Damien.

Intermediate Scratch Cup: Congratulations to local man Martin Wilson on winning the Intermediate Scratch Cup. Martin was just one shot clear of Convoy man Mark Rodgers on 116 for the 27,holes with Thomas McBride in third spot.

WCC Golf Tournament: B&S Golfer Tony Griffin got himself into the history books as the first golfer from all over Ireland to win the West Coast Challenge (WCC) back to back in its thirty two year history and in the process won the Rossnowlagh Cup .which a group of B&S golfers play for every year. This year's chooses charity was the Donegal Hospice who cared for the Late Joe Henderson who himself was always very much to the fore in the same competitions and for good craic, there was none better. A fantastic €800 was raised over the course of the tournament from the twelve local lads that participated. Here's to you Dark Cloud.

Teams: Michael Hynes and his Donegal Senoir Team do battle with Murvagh at home on Saturday 15th September in the first leg of the Donegal final. Best of Luck Lads.

JB Carr: The JB Carr Teams brilliant run came to an end in the All Ireland Finals when they came up against a top quality team from the K CLUB. This was a very emotional weekend for Team Captain Ivan Stewart who put in a great effort from the minute he was nominated to lead the team.

Donegal Minor League: Ballybofey and Stranorlar Golf Club played the second leg of Minor League semi final against Buncrana Golf Club and we had a mountain to surpass needing all 5 matches to reach the final and we almost pulled it off. Our first match out won 5/3, 4th match won 6/4 and 5th match won 7/6. The scenario was set for a close encounter 3 matches in needing our 2 matches on the course to bring in a result and down to the wire they went. Our second match was also an up and down affair but we eventually lost it on16th hole. The fight was over Buncrana needed just that one match to put them through to the final against Otway Golf club. Our final match was all square playing 16th and was called in. The Ballybofey and Stranorlar team under stewardship of John Patton was, B Kelly, P Finn, P Kavanagh, H Temple, D O'Connor, M. Johnston, C. Mc Hugh, P Callaghan, J Mc Hugh and O Finn.

West Coast cHALLENGE

Ballybofey & Stranorlar Golfer Tony Griffin became the first golfer to win the West Coast Challenge back to back in what is one of the top golfing tournaments in the North West of Ireland and indeed in the whole of Ireland.

The Tournament took place from Monday Sept 3rd to Thursday 6th September inclusive. It is played over the following four courses; Bundoran GC, Donegal/Murvagh GC, Strandhill GC and Enniscrone GC. Competitors from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France UK and Ireland took part in the competition. They thoroughly enjoyed the courses, weather, scenery and hospitality in the area and for the first year ever we had a local man score back to back victories.

This was Tony’s second year to play in the tournament and his local knowledge of the courses proved vital for the week. He laid down his intention early with a score of 44 stableford points on Day 1 in Murvagh. Day 2 saw him travel to Strandhill when again he proved consistent with another great score of 39 points. Day 3 Tony played Enniscrone GC and scored 33 points.

On day 4 the leader board was tightly packed with only 6 points dividing the top four players. Tony was in first place with 116 points, Thurles man Donal Hurley was lying second on 112 points, Ber Murphy Carlow GC was joint third with Johnny Kavanagh (Castletroy GC) on 110 points.

Tony was playing Bundoran GC a course he was very familiar with and this proved a definite advantage, he scored 37 points giving him a overall total of 153 stableford points 6 points over second placed Donal Hurley Thurles GC.

Along with his teammates Alaistair Henderson and Sean Carlin (Ballybofey & Stranorlar GC) they secured second overall in the team event.
