Alan Boyd of Gaoth Dobhair is the new Donegal GAA treasurer following the drawing of lots to decide the post at the Co. Board offices in Ballybofey this afternoon.
The other person who’s name was in the hat was Brendan Kelly of Cojnvoy.
The name of Brendan Kelly was drawn first from the hat and the procedure mans that he was eliminated and Boyd deemed elected.
Boyd is a former member of the Donegal Executive having served for a number of years as Oifigeach na Gaeilge.
The drawing of lots was necessary after the two candidates received 33 votes each in an election to fill the vacancy following the shock resignation of treasurer Cieran Kelly at the beginning of last month. That vote took place at the monthly Co. Committee meeting on Monday night last.
Because of the tie, Donegal chairman, Mick McGrath, postponed the election and sought clarification from the Ard Stiurthoir of the GAA in Croke Park, Tom Ryan, on the matter.
And now following the clarification the filling of the vacancy was completed by means of drawing of lots, drawing a name from the hat.
This was clarified by the Ard Stiurthoir as the correct procedure. The clarification was emailed to the county’s 40 clubs early on Wednesday morning by the County Administrator explained. And it read; “The position is that according to the Association's guidelines for implementing PR, there is no casting vote.
“Instead the result of the ballot is to be determined by drawing lots between the two candidates, with the first candidate to be drawn out eliminated.”
