Donegal Youth Matchplay Cup:The Dunfanaghy juniors overcame Ballybofey and Stranorlar 5-1 in two ‘Ryder Cup’ style home and away legs on Thursday night and Friday morning past to progress to the semi-final of the Donegal Youth Matchplay Cup. The team consisted of Luke Kelly & Conor Hanna, James Sweeney & James Marriott and Carlos O’Reilly and Rory Kelly in the four-ball better-ball format.
The standard of golf played was incredible over the 2 legs, with the top match of Luke and Conor vs Thomas McMenamin and Patrick Carr consisting of no less than 13 birdies between them! In idyllic conditions on Saturday 17th July, 70 ladies (approximately) headed for the Murvagh Links with high hopes that it might be their day. Lady Captain - Mrs Mary Walsh was on hand with a smile to meet and greet all the competitors. The Club House looked resplendent, decorated with magnificent floral arrangements in every available space. As always, the ladies were eager to view the Prize Table which had been beautifully arranged by the Lady Captain.
When all the Murvagh ladies had gone out, Mary welcomed Lady Captains and friends from neighbouring Golf Clubs to play in the Visitor’s section. This was followed by a 9 hole competition for men. The main competition for Lady Captain’s prize to the men was played for on Sunday 8th July in glorious sunshine.
The evening proceedings began with a delicious buffet and afterwards as anticipation heightened, the Lady Captain addressed all those present. She expressed how honoured and privileged she felt to be Lady Captain of Donegal Golf Club. She thanked Miriam Bennett who asked her to take on the role and was delighted to have Máirín McCartney as her Vice-Captain, a lady who epitomises calmness. Mary spoke of Mr Captain Denis Kelly who is a very talented musician and light footed on the dance floor. He has also been a great help and support to her throughout the year.
Lady Captain Mary acknowledged so many members of the club who work tirelessly on an on-going, voluntary basis to run and improve the club.
Mary concluded her speech by showing appreciation for her supportive family who had been there for her in the busy times, particularly in the lead up to the big day. Larry and her three sons Enda, Gavin and Darren who were on hand to do the running & carrying, the feeding & watering.
The scores were exceptional and the tension was palpable but it was Joan Thomas who pipped everyone else at the post. She had a magnificent score of 67 nett and lost 3 shots off her handicap.

Ballybofey and Stranorlar
Patsy Mullan put in a brilliant display of golf on Day 2 of Mr Gerry Driver's captain's day in Ballybofey and Stranorlar Golf Club, to win The Captain's Prize outright. Carding two birdies and eleven pars in his round early on sunday morning, and despite only having 34pts on day one, Paddy immediately got a feel good factor for the weekend.
During his wait he had to endure all of the leaders go out to add to what was some fine first round scores. At the same time, the four gross players took the field and the overnight leader in this section was none other than young Ryan Griffin (B&S Junior Caption) who carded a fantastic -3 under par. Ryan's competitors on day two were Martin McFadden, Roger Campbell and Matthew McAuley. The young Convoy man was to hold his nerve and go one to win the Gross thanks to a change in the eligibility rules of the club at the previous council meeting.
As the day went on, whispers were starting to circulate that the now chasing pack of leaders were starting to falter. Cathal McGee, day 1 leader just could not get a score together although very happy at how he was hitting the ball. The man rumored as favourite after day one, Michael Scanlan with a very wise and experienced head had no answer to the eventual winner. Although being a very close and personal friend, Michael was delighted to see his fellow Early Bird member win the Captains Prize for 2018.
A fabulous night was hard after captain's meal when Captain Gerry thanked everyone who had helped him so much throughout the year and made his workload a lot easier; he thanked his family and in particular his wife Angeline for all the support she had given him whilst taking the role of captaincy and she herself said a few words about the importance of young people taking part in Sport for the good of their mental well-being. Angeline is involved in cycle against suicide and knows the importance of socialising and keeping active. Gerry heaped a lot of praise on his Vice captain Seán Carlin and Lady Captain Josephine Stewart who where there for him time and time again when he needed them as were all other council members, bar staff and greens staff. A presentation was made to Mary and the Lady Captain for their support.
