Our Sportshall athletes had a very successful few days away at the weekend representing our club and county at the 2018 UK Sportshall Athletics finals in Manchester. On Saturday in the Under 13s, Aoife Mc Gee, Maghery, finished an impressive 7th place overall in the Speedbounce with a total of 80 jumps. Aoife also had strong performances in both the 2 Lap and the 4x2 lap relay which she was joined in by fellow club mate Kevea Gallagher, Burtonport, who also managed to pull off a fantastic top 10 finish in the 6 lap time trial. Ryan Brennan, Falmore, finished an overall 4th place in the vertical jump with a score of 57cm, a mere 2cm away from a UK bronze medal. Ryan also competed well, earning valuable team points, in both the 2 lap and the 4x2 lap relay. Last but not least of our Under 13 competitors was Pat Boner, Burtonport, who put in a gutsy performance in Speedbounce to earn himself an overall 5th place with a total of 80 jumps.
Sunday’s u-15 competition began on a high as Gweedore’s Johnson Bangora was presented with his Ulster U-15 All-Rounder framed certificate. Johnson went on to excel yet again on the day with an outstanding all time PB of 3.01m in the Standing Long Jump, not only breaking what has been a 20 year long Ulster record but also earning himself a much sought after gold medal on the podium. Sunday’s finished on as equal a high as it began, when Leah Mc Garvey, Gweedore, pulled out all the stops in the Paarlauf relay to earn herself a well-deserved UK bronze medal. Overall, a very successful and enjoyable weekend for all. Points were earned, medals were won, records were broken, but most important of all, lifelong friendships and memories were created. Thank you to our club, our coaches and our parents who endlessly support these young athletes as they achieve their goals. Well done to all!!
A large group of club and local athletes took part in the Convoy 10k with a number of great performances and well done to all. Others took part in the Born to Run 5k in Ballymena on Saturday.
The club are holding a fundraiser race for the track development on Saturday 28th April at 3pm with Registration starting at 1:30pm at Carrickfinn Running Track. There will be 5k and 10k races.
