St. Eunan’s, Letterkenny came good in extra time before they eventually got the better of Killybegs in a thoroughly entertaining County U16 League Final in Glenfin on Sunday evening.
St. Eunan’s . . . . 2-17
Killybegs . . . . 2-7
(after extra time)
Goals from Michael Gallagher and Peter McEniff in the second period of extra time killed off the Killybegs challenge.
And just to underline the Letterkenny club’s dominance in the two periods of extra time, they scored 2-5 to just a point from their opponents, to win in the end with ten points to spare.
But Killybegs caused St. Eunan’s more than a few problems on a night when the windy conditions made things difficult for both teams.
The South Donegal club led by two points at half time, 2-3 to 0-7.
They got off to a rip-roaring start with a goal in the opening seconds of the contest from Ryan Cunningham.
They led 1-3 to 0-1 before St. Eunan’s scored five points without reply to get back on level terms - Michael Gallagher (3), McEniff and Conor O’Donnell their scorers.
Sean Breen then gave them the lead but Charlie Boyle struck a second goal for Killybegs right on half time to put his team two points up at the break.
St. Eunan’s were the dominant force after half time and the brilliant O’Donnell and Ellison were their chief scorers as they pegged their opponents back. Ellison looked to have won it for St. Eunan’s with a fine score from way out on the left but right at the death, Killybegs sent the game to extra time when Karl Gallagher’s score made it 2-6 to 0-12.
By half time in extra time, St. Eunan’s had moved three points clear with points from O’Donnell (2) and Ellison.
By the end of the second period of extra time, the lead was out to ten with the Killybegs challenge ending when first Gallagher and then McEniff scored goals for the winners.
It was fitting that the final score was put over by Conor O’Donnell - one of St. Eunan’s star performers on a night when there was some excellent football played by both teams.
