Dunfanaghy Golf Club hosts Pro-Am event

Dunfanaghy Golf Club is this weekend playing host to some of the top golfers in the country who will take part in the annual Pro-Am event.

It's a competition that always attracts plenty of interest among locals and visitors alike and with over 50 of the top professionals in Ireland taking part, Dunfanaghy is the place to be on Saturday and Sunday.

It's the highlight of this weekend's action in Donegal.

Fixtures: On Saturday, 11th June there will be a gents open competition. On Sunday, 12th June, it's a members competition and on Wednesday, 15th June a gents open competition. A time sheet is in operation for all competitions contact 0749159459 or go online to www.portsalongolfclub.com

Members are advised that John Logue’s Captain's day will take place on Saturday, 25th June

Results: The winner of the Saturday open competition was Davey Deeney (15) 36 points, runner-up K Williamson (23) Newlands 34 points, gross Sean Kelly (8) 24 points, 3rd Oisin Friel (20) 34 points The CSS was 35 points.

On Sunday the winner of the members competition was Mick Bowe (23) 40 points, runner up Rory Mc Dermott (20) 38 points, gross Ryan Mc Gettigan (5) 32 points, 3rd Kevin Boyce (12) 37 points. The CSS was 37 points.

On Monday the winner of the open competition was John Shields (6) 41 points, runner up Oisin Harkin (20) 37 points, gross Ryan Mc Gettigan (5) 29 points. The CSS was 36 points

Team news: The Ulster Cup team entertained Portadown golf club on Sunday last and the match was a much closer encounter than the result shows. The home team emerged with six matches to one, however, at one stage the travelling team were up in five matches. It all looks like being a very close match in the return leg which is scheduled for Sunday.

The Portsalon Pierce Purcell team will play Spa Golf Club, the match is due to be played in Omagh golf course on a date to be arranged. The return match in the Donegal League against Greencastle will be staged this Friday and the Portsalon team hold a four and half to half match lead.

Bundoran Ladies

The Rory and Pearse O’ Neill Newsagent, Ballyshannon June Bank Holiday competition had a popular winner in Lady Captain Kathleen O’Neill.

The Brook Insurance Brokers Ballyshannon (Bernie McKenna) competition on Thursday last had the following winners: 1st Kathleen O’Donnell 38 points, 2nd Kathleen Connolly 37 points, 3rd Ann O’Neill 36 points. Front nine Celeste Barbour 20 points, Back nine Linda Beattie 21 points.

The club team played out a draw with Narin Portnoo G.C. in the home leg of the Maura O’Donnell competition on Sunday last. Best wishes in the return leg.

This Friday, 10th June, prizes will be presented for recent competitions in the Clubhouse at 9 p.m. The new competition “Nine and Dine” will also take place on Friday 10th and can be booked online. This novel social event, combining a nine hole competition and a meal, is open to visitors also. Members €12 Visitors €15. All welcome.

This Thursday’s club competition is a stableford competition. This week-end Saturday 11th and Sunday, 12th June, all golfers are invited to take part in the Club Classic which is sponsored by Western Car Sales. Book online for a suitable time.

Letterkenny Ladies

The Mount Errigal Hotel sponsored the 18-hole competition on Tuesday, May 31st. With our continuing great spell of weather the course was in splendid condition much to the delight of the competitors. The winner was Cynthia Fuery with 38pts (bot) coming in second was Elaine Russell also on 38pts, and taking third place with 37pts was Katrina Rainey. Great golf ladies, well done.

Team news: On Saturday, the Letterkenny Ladies Junior Cup Team defeated Allen Park(Antrim). Many congratulations to this formidable team and their captain Marian O'Sullivan. They now move on to the next round, Belvoir Park is the next venue. We wish them great golf in their successful progress in this competition.

On Sunday Barnhill hosted the Minor and Intermediate Cups. It was another splendid day.

The Minor team captained by Bridget Mc Clafferty was out first playing Balmoral. Unfortunately it was not to be their day and they failed to progress in the competition. We must acknowledge their commitment to their club by participating in the competition. Thank you to Bridget and the other team members.

Following after the Intermediate team, captained by Anne Condon, played Donaghadee. They were successful and will play Kilrea in the next round on a date to be announced before July 4th. Congratulations, and good luck to Anne and her team.

The Maura O'Donnell team, playing at home on Monday and very ably captained by Celine Bradle,y scored 2/half matches against North West. The return match is scheduled for Sunday June 26th. Well done Celine and team, and good luck in Lisfannon.

Congratulations to the Minor Cup team who won 4.5 matches at home against Lisburn on the return leg which brings them into the next round. The team was Pat McCaughan Anna Dillon, Brid McMenamin, Molly McGee and Breid Kelly and team captain Anne Glancy.

Congratulations also to the Intermediate team who are in the next round having clinched the win against Balmoral. Winning 5 matches at home and when away to Balmoral with one win and others dormy 3 up and 2 up, they were called in. The Mary McKenna team also won the County Championship against Greencastle. They secured 3 wins away and got 4 at home to go into the next round against Clandeboy. The Lady Beginner lessons are going very well and the new ladies show great potential. There are eight in number and it will be no time before they have a handicap.

The Girls lessons are also going very well and with 31 girls, it augers well for the future of the club.

The calendar is presently very busy with team outings in the next few weeks. No fewer than six teams are doing battle for the club, they are the Senior foursomes, Junior Cup, Minor Cup, Intermediate cup.
The Maire O'Donnell and North West League will have their first outings this month as well.


The good weather made for a busy weekend on all fronts at Donegal Golf

Club with visitors, societies, teams and competitions. The course however, lived up to its reputation and didn't give away anything easily.

The Millpark Hotel event was well contested with the top 4 players

all on 37 pts. Mark Butler just edged his way to first place ahead of

Barry Kennedy in second. Michael McGarvey in third pushed Damien Mc

Dermot into fourth and the gross was won by Enda Campbell with 30pts.

Standard scratch for the day was 35pts.

Next Sunday, Donegal will host Round 1 of the Barton Shield where 16 teams of 4 play a foursomes match. There are four other qualifyling venues to be played on the day as well making 64 teams in the first round proper. Donegal play Derry in the first round in the morning and if they qualify, the 2nd round is played that afternoon.

Plenty of opportunity to play during the week in the Open day on Wednesday and the Club Mixed on Friday.

The teams were again out in force and both the Ulster Cup team against

Greenacres and the Minor League against Otway in closely fought matches, bowed out on a count-back of holes. In a marathon match at home on Monday, the Irish Fourball team battled both the weather and Nairn & Protnoo only to finish second.

The Fred Daly team are still in the hunt for glory and are warming up

for their next match against Lisburn shortly.

Anyone hoping to win a major this year had better get to the practice

area as Mr Gerry Forde's Captain's Day is creeping up very soon on

Other news: Well done to Tony Griffin and his Donegal League team who took on Strabane at home on Monday evening and came out with four and a half matches to one half of a match. They should now head to Strabane with a certain degree of confidence.

Joe Henderson's Donegal Seniors travelled to Narn/Portnoo for their return leg. Needing to win two matches, his side just managed to get one and a half matches, although at one time it looked like they might have got four matches, but it wasn't to be.

Good luck to our Jimmy Bruen team who take on Bangor team Carnalea GC. B&S will take on the Co Down side in Moyola (neutral venue) this Saturday, 11th June.

On Sunday 12th at the same venue, our All Ireland Four Ball Team take on Moyola GC so good luck to Fergus McMenamin and his troops.

President’s Day takes place this Saturday with a large entry confirmed for the event. The format will be 18-hole stableford with a 9-hole play-off in the evening for top 15 and equal. A meal will take place in the clubhouse on Saturday night with the presentation and music afterwards.

Tommy Diver won the Corn Liam O H-ic í at the weekend, Tommy shot 47pts to beat Martin Kelly in second who had 44pts. In third place was young Sean Doherty with 41pts. Gross this weekend goes to Cathal og with 35pts while the nines go to Tony Gallagher with 22pts and Con Friel also with 22pts. Michael Rodgers took the category with 39pts. CSS 39pts.

The doubles matchplay competition is under way and all teams have under two weeks now to complete the first round.

Some of the best golfers in the country will be descending upon Dunfanaghy Golf Club this weekend for the staging of the annual Club Pro Am. Over 50 of the country's top professionals have added their names to the list of contenders in what has become one of the most popular events on the Irish PGA professional circuit. Aside from the professional competition, there is also a team competition with one professional assigned to each team of four. This is a terrific event for both competitors and spectators. Non-members are welcome to come along and enjoy the event both on the course and in the clubhouse.

Our Lady Captain Mary Lafferty is also organising a sponsored walk to raise funds for the refurbishment of the clubhouse and bar. Sponsorship cards have now been issued.

In this week's competitions, the McColgan boys featured prominently. Dean McColgan was the winner of the open singles Stableford on Saturday with a great score of 45 points. Niall McCormack was second with 43 points while Adrian Cummings was third with 42 points. Niall Carroll won the gross with 36 points.

Michael McColgan jnr was the winner in Sunday's Monthly Medal Competition with another terrific score of 59 net. John Chambers was second with 64 BOT. Niall McCormack featured again with a score of 64 BOT to finish in 3rd. Daniel McColgan won the gross with a 72

In the Senior Open on Monday, Neil McGinley picked up another first place prize while Cyril Robinson won the Wednesday Open with a great score of 40 pts

Junior Golf: In this week's Academy Section, Sean McBride was the winner. Shot of the day went to Jack Druce with the mighty drive on the 17th.

With up to 100 entrants for the mid-week competition, it proves what a very popular sponsor we have in Mc Donalds Restaurant & Take-Away [Victor Byrne] Letterkenny, and 'eating' up the course on Wednesday 1st June was new member Barry Whyte [13] who hit 42pts. In runner-up spot was former club captain Tom Mc Donagh [21] who returned 40pts to pip third placed Karol Harvey [17] by one point. In fourth place was the evergreen Kenny King [9] with 37 pts and gross was collected by the mecurical Con Boyce [5] with 34 gross points. Visitor's prize went to Eugene Gallagher [16] with 37pts.

Friday 3rd had the Barnhill club hosting the now annual charity classic in aid of Raphoe Community Playgroup and Dromore Primary School and taking centre stage was the team of Joe Coyle [6], Pauric Dunleavy [11], Eddie Margey [11] and Tony Mc Namee snr [24]. Their 100pts pipped second placed Rory Blaney [15], Shane Blaney [18], Tony Logue [18] and Vincent Bianconi [18] who returned a normal winning score of 98pts. The team of Eamonn Mc Dermott [5], Peter Muldoon [11], Pat Keating [18] and Eamonn Stevenson [24] were in third place on 97pts.

Saturday 4th was another big day for the club when the St. Eunan's Alumni Annual Golf outing took place (see round-up on this page.)

Saturday's confined competition [club members only] was won by Shane Blaney [18] with a magnificent 47pts! What a score, you might say, and it could easily have been more but for double bogey's at 15th and 16th. Well done Shane! In second spot was Paul Mc Guckin [21] with 42 pts.

Sunday 5th Open proved another milestone in the career of Donegal GAA team captain Michael Murphy [14] for, having been practicing under the tutorial of club PGA Professional Seamus Mc Monagle, Michael recorded his first golf competition win at his home club with a significant 45pts.

In runner-up spot with 40 pts was last season's forerunner for golfer of the year, Conor Mc Gettigan [9] who had chopped five shots off his handicap in two months before the end of the 2015 season.

Monday 6th Open competition, sponsored by J.J. Reid Motors, Letterkenny, saw another large turn-out on a great summeresque day and taking home the main prize as well as the tan was John Coghlan [17] who with 42 pts by virtue of a B.O.T., relegated Hugh Mc Clafferty [13] to runner-up spot. In third place was the never ending supporter of club competitions Ciaran Clerkin [22] with 41pts and winning the gross category was Eamon Mc Glinchey [6], whose eagle at The Isle [par five 7th] and birdie at 11th helped him to 31 gross points.

Letterkenny Golf Club Open Week tees-off tomorrow, Friday 10th with an 18 hole Singles Stableford sponsored by Specsavers and continues on Saturday with a 4Ball Betterball sponsored by Derryveagh Crystal whilst on Sunday an 18 hole Stroke takes place sponsored by CoLab, LYIT.

Congratulations to the club teams of Ulster Cup and Ulster 4Ball who did themselves proud last week with magnificent victories over Hollywood GC and Mourne GC respectively.

Drum Bar Golf Society

On a beautiful day for golf and on a fantastic course, we had 27 players taking part in a scramble event on Saturday at Letterkenny golf club.

Once again, the society was very well looked after by the club members and our thanks are extended to them.

The winning team in the scramble event was: Dave Moore, Davey Moore, Ollie Moran and Mickey Madden. Well done to them. In second place was the team of Pat Lochnane, Kevin Harley, Pauric Monnelly and Oliver Duffy.

The longest drive prizes were won by Kevin Harley and Mary Rose Dullaghan and Hughie Kelly was nearest the pin.

Cruit Island

The weather was fantastic on Saturday and Sunday for the McElwee Open and conditions were perfect. However, the course was playing difficult and scoring was not easy.

John Gillespie was delighted on Sunday night when the results came through and he had won. His birdie on the 18th green was of the utmost importance. Very well done to John who has won this prestigious competition for the second time.
