There was little between these two sides in Trummon on Saturday night as Naomh Brid just prevailed at the end against 14-man Fanad Gaels.
Naomh Brid . . . . . . . 1-5
Fanad Gaels . . . . . 0-7
Not for the first time, it was Pauric McDaid, now the Naomh Brid ‘keeper, who came the full length of the field to fire home the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after just four minutes.
The goal put Naomh Brid 1-1 to no score and they were to add the next point on 13 minutes, but then went a full 24 minutes before they raised another flag.
Naomh Brid were totally on top in the opening quarter and could have had two more goals as Brendan Friel made a magnificent stop from Paul McGrory on 12 minutes and the home side should have had a goal two minutes later but over elaboration saw the move break down.
That miss seemed to inject life into Fanad as they took over for the second quarter and by half-time they were deservedly back on terms, 1-2 to 0-5.
Seamie ‘Coshia’ Friel opened their account and Mark Friel added a second on 16 minutes. Then Seamie ‘Nanny’ Friel came to life at full-forward and added three points, two frees and a ‘45’. One of those frees came as Friel cut in along the endline and was almost in on goal.
However, Fanad undone some of their good work three minutes from the break when Niall Carr was shown a straight red for an off the ball incident with Gary McCafferty.
‘Nanny’ Friel edged Fanad ahead for the only time in the game six minutes into the second half, but Naomh Brid finally got going again and after a good pass from Cian Gallagher, Shane Walsh levelled.
Darragh Brogan, with a really strong second half performance, edged Naomh Brid back in front on 41 minutes and the home side could and should have put daylight on the scoreboard when Walsh availed of a poor kick-out and with just the ‘keeper to beat opted to cross for Gary McCafferty, who should have palmed the ball to the net. But he took possession and his effort was saved by a retreating defender on the line.
Pauric McDaid came forward to punish from a 40m free on 48 minutes and the only response Fanad mustered was a last minute free from Seamus ‘Nanny’ Friel to reduce the margin to the minimum.
When it mattered Thomas Gallagher, Clint Walsh, Shane Walsh, Paul McGrory, Darragh Brogan, Sam Burgess, Ross Gallagher and the evergreen Pauric McDaid were best for the winners, while the Friels, Michael Sweeney (although he sometimes held on too long), Joe Blaney, Brendan Friel and Mark Friel were best for Fanad.

Big result for Gaels
Letterkenny Gaels continued their excellent home form with another good victory over Buncrana at Pairc na nGael on Saturday evening with Gaels full forward Conor McBrearty hitting 2-4.
Letterkenny Gaels . . . . . . . . . 3-8
Buncrana . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2-8
The visitors opened brightly with good scores from Caolan McGonagle and Odhran Doherty in the opening 2 minutes. Gaels full forward Conor McBrearty opened the home team's account in the 7th minute and Gaels Captain, Brendan O Brien followed soon after with an excellent long range score to level matters.
David Bell responded for the visitors on the quarter hour. Gaels full forward McBrearty who was been closely marshalled by Buncrana’s Full back Garvin Friel found the net on the 20th minute after good approach play.
Buncrana’s corner forward Bell responded immediately before Gaels wing back Conor Browne raided up field for another excellent score. McGonagle converted a '45 on 26 minutes for the visitors before McBrearty pointed another free for the hosts. John Doran put three points between the sides and immediately after this Buncrana centre half forward Oisín Doherty goaled for the visitors to level matters. McBrearty hit a late point to send Gaels to the interval with a slender half time lead 1-6 to 1-5. The visitors opened the second half brightly with a Kevin Treacy point in the opening minutes of the second half. However the hosts stood firm and Conor McBrearty restoring their lead by the 9th minute.
Odhran Doherty levelled matters a minute later. Soon after Gael’s Cormac Cannon won the ball and after an excellent run was impeded in the square and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty which McBrearty dispatched to the net.
Both defences were now on top before Paddy Doherty and Buncrana’s Treacy exchanged scores. In injury time Mark Hunter neatly dispatched a goal past Buncrana’s Sean Parker to put six points between them. Again the hosts immediately responded with a second goal from Oisín Doherty as the home team just about held on for a valuable two points.
The home team gave an excellent team performance while the visitors will be disappointed at giving top of the table Ballyshannon a four point cushion.
