Ballybofey and Stranorlar

Nerves of steel was how B&S Ulster Cup Team Captain John McMenamin described his hero of the day, Eunan McGarrigle .

Cavan G.C came to Ballybofey and Stranorlar needing 3 and 1/2 matches to secure their passage into the next round of this prestigious competition but the B&S team had next round as part of their plans too. As each match came to its conclusion, it was getting clear that no one side was going to have a clear overall victory. In the end, the home side had victory on the day by the same margin as they lost away in Cavan which meant seven matches each and when it came down to holes won, that turned out to be even-stephens as well. The only option left was a sudden death shootout. B&S Team Captain was to select Eunan McGarrigle to go down the first playoff hole and talking to me after the game, John said that Eunan stood on the tee-box with nerves of steel and bombed it down the middle of the fairway and went on to win the hole giving victory to Ballybofey and Stranorlar GC. Well done team: Tony Fullen, James McAllister, Eunan McGarrigle, Martin Lynch, Ciaran Campbell, Andy McGlynn and Barry Allan. Team Captain John McMenamin. They now meet Mahee Island in the next round.

B&S Ulster Fourball Team had an excellent win also on Saturday with Convoy man Kevin Kelly and his partner Martin Wilson winning their match to put B&S GC through so well done lads.

Gents results: Tuesday 12th Sweep, 1st Nett: Seán Carlin (10) 38pts. CSS 67

Sat 16th Sweep, 1st Nett Aaron Anderson (8) 40pts, 2nd Nett: Gerry Driver (10) 38pts, Gross, Martin Dillon (9) 26pts, 3rd Nett: Gerard McGee (16) 37pts (CSS) 67

Sunday 17th Sweep, 1st Nett: John McMenamin (9) 39pts (bot), 2 Nett: Ryan Griffin (9) 39pts (bot), Gross: Denim Rowan (5) 30pts, 3rd Nett: Gerry Driver (10) 38pts (bot), CSS 68.

Fixtures: Saturday 23rd is kindly sponsored by Foy Brothers and Sunday 24th is kindly sponsored by Quinn Fuels so a big thank you from the Club for your sponsorship. Tuesday 26th will be an Open up until 4pm. Reserved for members thereafter.

Sheets are now up for Senior Cup, Baker Cup, Phoenix Cup and Cricket Cup. Please put your name down as soon as possible. Spring League is coming to a conclusion and will have an update next week.

A large contingent from B&S had an outing in Carton House Golf Club over the weekend under the banner of LWC Tours. A great weekend was had by all who attended and the eventual winner over both courses, the O'Meara and the Montgomery was Mr Conor McMenamin.

Please remember as ground is still soft, to replace divots (please carry a divot bag) and repair pitch marks.

Enjoy your golf.

Saturday 16th Open, played in wet and windy conditions, saw the 'form' player of the early season, Kevin Rafferty [6] take top spot once again. His 35pt finish relegatde Kevin Hensey [12] to runner-up spot on B.O.T. Also beaten on that B.O.T. was Mark Cohen [19] and John Mc Glynn [17].

Sunday 17th had the club hosting the first 'major' of the season with the highly sought after Voucher prize up for grabs and the high entry on a wet morning and gale-swept afternoon proved this competition's popularity. Banking the member's fee for 2017 was Cat. 4 member Pluincead O' Fearraigh [22] who, having held steady through the lower part of the course, climbed the hill to register a back nine of 22pts and secure the win on 42pts., closely followed by juvenile Patrick Page [10] a panelist for the club's Jimmy Bruen squad this year. Patrick had 40pts. In third place was Paul Callaghan [26] with 39pts on B.O.T. from Paddy Mc Cafferty [23]. Gross prizewinner was Darragh Mc Menamin [4] on 31pts, helped with birdies at 10th, 16th and 18th holes for another level par back nine.

CAT 4 members are into their third week of the season already and another great turn out of up to 25 players saw Joe Curran taking the plaudits with a winning score of 24pts over 11 holes with Joe Devenny in runner-up spot with 23pts. Apologies from Gerry for not informing players of temporary greens due to hollowtining, but also a reminder to members to return all cards for the Golfer of the Year standings which will be posted during the next month.

Congratulations to Tony Logue on his 'ace' at Greenhill [8th] on Sunday.

Congratulations to the club's Ulster Cup team panel who, under the shrewd guidance of vice-captain Keith Spence, progressed to the next round by defeating Inishowen neighbours Ballyliffin GC. Leading by 5 & 1/2 matches to 1 & 1/2 from the first leg and requiring only two matches at home, Rory Kenny put the first 'point' on the board with an 8&7 victory, quickly followed by Eugene O' Donnell with 4&3 and all up in the remaining matches bar one, with both Charlie Coughlan and Liam Wiseman 4up, Eamonn Davis 2up and Kieran Walsh 2 down when called in.

Friday's competition will be the Ladies' Club Fundraising Open Classic, any combination, a few spaces still available. Saturday's Open is sponsored by Letterkenny Driving Range, The Glebe, whilst Wednesday 27th hosts the Signal Signs Open.

The first of the weekly club competitions started on Wednesday, 13th April. There was a good turnout despite the cold conditions. Mae Ferry and Margaret Hynes were in top form with 36 pts each despite the very slow and rather bumpy greens. Cat 3 1st May Ferry 36 pts 2nd Mary Brogan 32 pts; Cat 2 Margaret Hynes 36 pts 2nd President Mary P. O'Flanagan 31 pts; Cat 1 Ann Sweeney 30 pts 2nd Lady Capt Margaret McCrossan 29 pts bot. The Lady Captain, Madam President and the ladies branch extend their condolences to Ann Glancy and Eileen Reilly on the death of their mother on Sunday.

The Sunday stroke competition sponsored by La Bella Donna Restaurant saw Peter McDonnell follow up on his recent Thursday sucess by shooting a jaw-dropping 69 in difficult conditions. Francis Brogan didn't dissapoint either with a superb 70, just enough to push Darragh Quinn in to third. Darragh will rue a weak shot on the 18th which might have put him in the top spot, at least he knows how Jordan Speith felt. Alan O'Keefe, with a solid 71, took fourth and Darren Rafferty shot a 77 for the gross. It is good to see that the gross prize is now hotly contested by more and more low handicappers.

Saturday saw the 2nd annual Narin & Portnoo Golf Club vs. Donegal Golf Club Ladies friendly take place in Murvagh. There was a fantastic turnout from both clubs on the day with over 50 ladies taking to the links.

Led by Margaret Trimble with 34pts the home side took the spoils on the day, and even though the trophy changed, Nairn & Portnoo are optimistic about the return!

Other Donegal ladies who contributed to the victory were Miriam Bennett 33pts, Mary Farragher 32pts, Rena Brogan 31pts and Anne McGlynn 31pts

Thanks again to Narin & Portnoo Golf Club ladies for a very sporting match and we look forward to the return leg away which is on 24th September.

The Thursday Specials held a 3 club competition last Saturday and picking a winner from the bunch proved difficult with the top 3 all on 18pts. We had another busy week at the club with some sunny, but cold weather. Wednesday's competition was won by Eamon Hunter with 42 points. Eamon beat cousin Patrick into second place and briefly held the family bragging rights. Patrick had an excellent score of 40 points but that proved only to be a warm up for the big event of the week.
