Captains' drive-in at Bundoran

Captains' drive-in at Bundoran

Bundoran Golf Club was the latest club in Donegal to host their Captains' Drive-In last week and best wishes are extended to Reg Cummins and Kathleen O'Neill for the year ahead.

The good weather in the county has prompted an increase in golfing activity on our fairways and greens and as our round-up reports, there were some fine scores recorded across the north west in recent days.

The results of the first sponsored competition of the season, kindly

sponsored by the Criterion Bar (Nan & Patricia Brennan) are as follows:

1st: Oran Gallagher 66, 2nd : Malachy Kearney 67, 3rd: Shane Feeney 69, 4th: Brendan McCauley 70, Gross: Enda McFadden 73

Congratulations to all, particularly young Oran on his first win.

Presentations will be held at 9pm on April 22nd.

The competition next weekend will also be stroke, sponsored by Belleek

Pottery. The winner will be invited to represent Bundoran Golf Club at the

Regional Qualifiers of the Rory McIlroy / Dubai Duty Free Irish Pro-Am,

along with the winner of the Ladies' Competition.

North West Alliance

So, the curtain came down on another successful winter season for the North Western Golfing Alliance, now in its 47th year.

This Captain’s Day on Saturday at Sandy Hills, Rosapenna, heralded the start of spring with a chilly but mild wind and, most of all, a dry day.

The winner of Mr David Forbes' Captain's prize was long time Alliance member Eamonn O’Carroll of Letterkenny GC., but,...., consider the start Eamonn had to his round! A bogey at the par five 1st and then a 15 at the par 4 second! Yes, I kid you not, a ‘15’.

Well, there must be something in his mentality because Eamonn thereafter scored 32 points for the next 14 holes and then, well, he was off again scoring 11 at the par five 17th. A sigh of relief as he had got rid of all his bad shots again and he recorded four points by birdieing the par four 18th. With that ‘Roryesque’ style finish, he had amassed 38 points to win the Captain’s Prize by two points. So, for those of us who are tempted to pick up the ball after all the stableford points have gone for the hole, pause for thought that maybe, just maybe, tenacity has its place. A big congratulations to Eamonn on his magnificent victory.

Faughan Valley GC. members had turned out in full to give their Alliance Captain a really good day and they were rewarded with three of them - Glenn Curran, Gerry Irwin and Paul Duffy, taking the three nett prizes on 36 points each

Meanwhile, the usual suspects were fighting it out in the Gross section.

Alliance Golfer of the Year [gross] Michael McGeady was in brilliant form as he carded no less than five birdies to finish with a magnificent 68 gross, which translated into three under par for his round.

Brian McElhinney had a level par round for second spot. He had four birdies but also four dropped strokes. Local favourite John G.Mc Bride, now playing out of Portsalon, was in third spot on the winners platform with 18 holes at just 2 over par relegating Eddie McCormick on the B.O.T.

David Forbes, Faughan Valley GC., had graced the Alliance captaincy with an air of surity and calm, playing his part in another successful year for the long running Alliance. The usual bouquets of praise were given to honorary secretary Barry Ramsay for the efficient way he organizes the Alliance and tributes were also paid to Eamonn Davis, P.R.O., for his reports and considerable efforts in promoting the North Western Alliance.

Captain David thanked everyone for their participation throughout the year and offered every success to incoming captain Odhran Mc Gettigan.

St. Patrick definitely 'turned the stone' for Donegal golfers on Thursday 17th when spring sprung upon us with a mild breeze and sunshine. Teeing off on the first official competition of the season which had almost two hundred members on the time sheet, little did cat 4 handicapper John Mc Cosker [20] think that he was going home with a trophy but that he certainly did with a winning score of 39pts. With a great par at the most difficult par three, Hunters Home, [13th] helping him to 21pts on the back nine, John managed to pip runner-up Liam Wiseman [11] on B.O.T. Having recorded 20pts on outward nine, Liam would rue that double bogey at Aughaninshin 17th] which had him relegated to second but still enough to outpoint third placed MBH, [Michael Boucher-Hayes] whose birdie at Settlement [11th] was undone by a double bogey at 17th.

In fourth place was John Bradley with 36pts whilst gross prize was won by Simon Stephens [3] with 33 gross points, his birdies at 3rd and 11th accompanying his eagle [3] at The Isles, par five 7th, for a total of three over par 75 gross. It was great to see up to forty cat 4 members taking to the fairways, an indication of the work that Gerry O' Sullivan has done in his encouragement of new members.

Saturday 19th Open welcomed another large turn-out and another cat 4 golfer Paul Doherty [20] taking top spot with a magnificent 44 point total. Despite a 'blank' at 3rd and two double bogeys on the card, Paul's birdie at Sheep Hill [12th] consolidated his brilliant course management and gave him an inward nine of no less than 24pts and enough to relegate Hugh Mc Clafferty [14] to runner-up spot on B.O.T. Hugh's 44 point total consisted of nines of 22pts each, 39 gross shots. In third place with an early season intent was club stalwart and early starter Vincent Mc Glynn [9] whose two over par nines showed a birdie at 14th [Stack Yard] conceded to a bogey at par three 16th [Barnhill] to finish on 41pts. Saturday's gross was won by Kevin Rafferty [7] with 31 gross points which included back-to-back birdies at 17th and 18th [Stockade].

Sunday 20th confined competition completed a hat-trick of wins by the 'high men' when Martin Kelly [19] secured first place. Martin's front nine, consisting of a birdie at Hall Door [1st] helping him to 22pts, could have been added to spectacularly on the inward nine only for a double bogey at the par five 18th. Making a welcome return to Barnhill from his worldwide travels as of late and to the winners' enclosure was Derek Wilson [14] whose birdie at Sliabh Sneacht [4th] helped him to a front nine of 21pts and a final return of 39pts. Sunday's gross was collected by Don Ponsonby [5] with 30 gross points.

Appreciative thanks to Noreen and Browns on the Green for t3heir St. Patrick's Day specials and to those who took in the Paul Buckley session in the club bar on Saturday night last.

This bank holiday weekend of golf at Barnhill begins on Friday and extends through to Monday with a bonanza of Open competitions each day. Play will be from the white tees and 6" placing on fairways will be in effect. Time sheet in operation for all competitions.
