Letterkenny’s Brendan McCarroll, for the second time in a number of weeks, was a winner in the Alps Tour Golf professional tournament.
He took the honours with a superb final round of seven under 62 to take the Casino San Remo Open in Italy.
A few weeks ago, he was tops in the Gösser Open and is now second in the Order of Merit on the European Alps Tour. The top five in the order of merit qualify for the Challenge Tour in 2013.
Brendan’s final round 62 was good enough to deprive the overnight leader Jon Andrea Noder who missed a putt to take the contest to a play-off.
Greens of Sanremo golf course are small and rough nearby is dense and in addition the sea wind invited itself for last round. These elements were perfect to made a tasty recipe.
McCarroll’s risky strategy on the final day certainly paid off. “I drove so well that I decided to play aggressive. During the first round I had nightmares around greens, I could not chip well. But today it is ok. I just play my game and it works”.
For sure the player from Letterkenny was relaxed. He and his playing partner Jason Kelly shared jokes and it looked much like a practice round than a round for victory.
McCarroll, as a grand finale of the day, drove the 18th green in laughs. He missed the eagle putt but holed for birdie. At this moment, he had won his second title in 2 weeks without knowing it.
