Shay Given has begun pre-season training with Aston Villa’s reserves but is unlikely to be at the Premier League club when the new season kicks off.
The 37-year-old has been told he has no future at the club by Paul Lambert, joining Darren Bent and Stephen Ireland as the Villa boss continues to lower the club’s wage bill and average age.
Given was not included in the party travelling to Germany for Villa’s pre-season tour.
Lambert has drafted in Jed Steer from his former club Norwich City to act as back-up to first choice Brad Guzan, who signed a new four-year deal with the midlands club just this week.
Given has three years remaining on his Villa contract, which he signed when he left Manchester City in the summer of 2011.
