Shay Given has backed his former employers Manchester City to win the Premier League title after their 1-0 win over Manchester United on Monday night.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper spent two-and-a-half seasons at Eastlands before losing his place to England goalkeeper Hoe Hart but holds no grudges as things come to a head in the top flight. Vincent Kompany’s goal on Monday was enough to move Roberto Mancini’s side back on top on goal difference from their rivals with two games to play.
“It’s fantastic for the Premier League if, please God, Manchester City do win it, because Man United have won it enough times,” the Lifford native said this afternoon.
“I’ve got lots of friends at Manchester City and it would be fantastic if they could pick the trophy up, but they have got a tough game at my old club Newcastle at the weekend. I think they’re in the driving seat and hopefully they can get across the line.”
City’s next opponents are another of Given’s former teams, Newcastle United, at the JD Sports Arena on Sunday afternoon and the Republic of Ireland netminder feels Monday’s deby win will put a spring in their step.
“I’m sure Mancini is on a high this morning,” Given added. “It’s a great win but I’m sure he’s not getting carried away, there are a few games left to go and he will be keeping the players really focused on the job in hand. It’s in their hands now and it would be a shame if they threw it away.”
