The An Post FAI Schools Donegal 5-a-Side Primary schools competition came to a conclusion in Ballyare, Letterkenny.
The heavy conditions on the day made it difficult for the teams to play to their full potential.
Nevertheless, there was some excellent talent on display in all five sections.
In the “A” Schools section for smaller schools, Scoil Mhuire of Caiseal won all their games but were pressed hard by Killaghtee NS who finished in second place
In the “B” Schools section catering for medium sized schools, an impressive Kilmacrennan also won all their fixtures, leaving Scoil Padraig, Drumkeen in runners up position
Woodlands NS took the honours in the “C” Schools section for larger schools narrowly edging out the talented St. Mary’s of Stranorlar
In the Girls “A” Cup section, it all came down to the final game of the afternoon to decide who would represent Donegal in the Ulster Finals, which are due to take place next Wednesday, May 23 in Aileach FC, Burnfoot
Last year’s Ulster Champions Scoil Mhuire, Glenties were up against a confident and more importantly strong Castlefinn side. At half time, Glenties were trailing 3-0 and it didn’t look it would be their day. However, such is the determination and quality of their side, that they pulled back level and scored the all important winner in the last minute of time to edge it 4-3 in a magnificent game.
The Castlefinn side played some wonderful football but its the experienced Glenties outfit that progress onto the Provincial stage next week
In the Girls “B” Cup section, the Donegal Town girls from Aodh Rua agus Nula stormed home in first place. They won all their games with Stranorlar’s St. Mary’s having to settle for the silver medal
