Michéal Doherty scored from the penalty spot against his former club to earn Swilly Rovers the win over Letterkenny Rovers in the League Cup on Tuesday night.

However, the victory wasn’t enough to prevent Eamonn McConigley’s men qualifying from the group on goal difference - with the two sides ending level on four points behind the group winners, Fanad United.
Swilly’s winner came right at the death when Columba O’Donnell was brought down inside the area and Doherty beat James Gallagher from the penalty spot. Swilly had led for much of the contest after Darren Dunworth fired them in front on 27 minutes following excellent approach work from Laurence Toland.
Letterkenny created a number of decent openings in the first half. Mark Harkin saw his shot saved by Swilly keeper, Ciaran Molloy. Darren McElwaine also went close before Odhran McMacken’s cross-come shot clipped the crossbar. The visitors eventually drew level seven minutes from the end when half time substitute Graham Cullen fired home.
But there was to be another twist in the tie when Doherty kept his nerve to score the winner from the spot late on.
