LYIT kept their double ambitions alive with a comfortable win at the RSC in the Colleges and Universities Football League quarter-final against Waterford Institute of Technology yesterday afternoon.
Waterford IT 0
Letterkenny IT 3
First half goals from centre forwards Davitt Walsh and Oisin McMenamin set Niall McGonagle’s team on their way before a third was added just seven minutes into the second period by Luke O’Farrell to set up an interesting double-header with Athlone IT. Eight minutes in, Tony McNamee played a ball over the top for Walsh to chase and Kevin Byrne, the WIT goalkeeper on the books of Cork City, came from his line and was lobbed by the LYIT frontman.
Then, on 25 minutes, the lead was doubled in similar circumstances. This time Tommy Bonner sent McMenamin away and although Byrne came from his line again the Kildrum Tigers striker got the touch to lift the ball over him. McMenamin was brave and got a knock for his troubles but he had done enough to give his team a two-goal advantage.
Seven minutes into part two, the contest was effectively ended when O’Farrell headed home from six yards following a corner.
LYIT turn their attentions to the Colleges Football Association of Ireland quarter-finals. They welcome Athlone next Wednesday, kick-off 4pm, before meeting the same team in the semi-finals of the CUFL a week later at a neutral venue.
