Philip Deignan began Wednesday’s stage five of the Giro d’Italia 39th in the General Classification ahead of the 203km trek from Taranto to Viggiano.
The Letterkenny native trailed Australia’s Michael Matthews of Orica GreenEdge by 49 seconds.
Stage four between Giovinazzo and Bari was won by France’s Nacer Bouhanni following a sprint finish.
Deignan, who represents Team Sky, was 170th on the stage on the same time as Bouhanni.
After the first three stages of the race took place in Ireland, Deignan was 40th but jumped one place as Marcel Kittel, the winner of successive stages in Belfast and Dublin, on Tuesday abandoned the Giro d’Italia before the resumption in Italy due to illness.
