As we move into the last ten days of January and another new year it’s been a busy and eventful time for club athletes, administrators and coaches.
The old year ended with the prestigious 2014 Athletics Ireland awards banquet in the Crowne Plaza, Dublin. Congratulations to our own Karl Griffin, and to county man Mark English who received the Junior, Under 20, and Senior overall awards. Both have their sights on qualification for the European Indoors which takes place in Prague from 5th to 8th March. The 800m qualification time is 1min 48.5secs and it’s an event will have a special interest for all North West athletics supporters.
As we moved into the New Year a club group made the annual trip to a warm weather training camp in the Algarve. Monte Gordo from reports had much sunshine and the group certainly trained and some got ‘a tanned colour’.
At local level the Donegal Co Board awards ceremony last Friday night in the Finn Valley Centre, was well attended, superbly organised and had county and club award winners recognised. Congratulations to Tir Chonaill athletes Diarmuid O’Donnell, Clara Herron, Kate McGowan, Caolan O’Callaghan and Karl Griffin who received richly deserved awards
Next Sunday eight club athletes will contest the National Indoor Junior and U23 c/ships in Athlone. Best wishes to all.
Forty three young athletes have been entered and are preparing for the Ulster /ANI- 12-19 Indoor c/ships in Magherafelt on 31st Jan/1st Feb. The timetable for the two days will be published at the end of this week
The club hosts its annual awards night on Friday next at 7pm in the Abbey Hotel Donegal. Club administrators are busy on PC’s at the moment registering all members with Athletics Ireland - if you have not updated your membership please do so by end of January. From the attached club group training times [see below] and the unprecedented numbers attending club training sessions it is obvious that much good work is being done by members - organised, supported and encouraged by club coaches. Juvenile training has over one hundred attend each session in Glenties and Donegal Town. Junior and Senior training is well supported while the twice/three times weekly fit4life and couch to 5k groups are the success story of the club in early 2015 i.e. Couch to 5k group Ballyshannon, 45members, Donegal Town, 63 members, fit4life Donegal Town, 42 members and Glenties 28 members
