Fish Merchant PJ O’Reilly along with his partner Paul McCormick hooked a major handball title at the Handball Alley on the Mall, Ballyshannon on Saturday.
The partnership took the honours in the Edward Guilfoyle Memorial Doubles Tournament after a titanic struggle with Kevin Mulhern and Oisin Culleton.
The tournament took place over a number of weeks with 16 players competing. All the games were very closely contested. The final, the best of three games, saw O’Reilly and McCormick come out on top 21-18, 21-18.
The winners started strongly and were always in top in the opening game, leading 12-6 at one stage and then 18-12 before taking it 21-18.
The second game was much closer with Culleton starting well. They were level at 10-10 and again at 14-14 and once more at 18-18. However, it was O’Reilly and McCormick who finished strongly to take the title.
The magnificent trophies were presented by Joe Guilfoyle, brother of the late Edward Guilfoyle, who sponsored the event. Joe had travelled from Waterford and also present were other members of the extended Guilfoyle family.
There was a large attendance to cheer on the finalists.
The spotlight will now fall on the Joe Guilfoyle Perpetual Cup (also sponsored by Joe Guilfoyle) which will be held in August and September with the final culminating with the Ballyshannon Harvest Fair. Entries to Robert Lawn or Denis McGuinness or any of the committee.
The organisers thank all who take part and reiterate that the Handball Alley is available at any time and young players are more than welcome to come along.
