There is a new name on the Joe O Neill Perpetual Cup after 19 year old Ardara man Kieran Gallagher won the O Neills Bar sponsored event at the 5th annual Drimarone Open Darts Tournament at The Bluestack Centre on Sunday.
This young man displayed a consistently high standard of darts throughout the tournament and the level of finishing he showed is not something you witness too often from someone of such a tender age. Having accounted for Kilcar’s John Gallagher in the semi final, he came up against one of the pre-tournament favourites, Declan Cunningham in the final. Both players deserve immense credit for the quality of darts produced in the final but it was the young man from Ardara who won out on a scoreline of 5-3 and no doubt we will be hearing a lot more about him in the future.
Meanwhile in the Frankie Greene sponsored Shield there was a big local interest and it was fitting that Drimarone’s own Joseph Furey was crowned champion. Joseph has consistently been one of the best dart throwers in the locality for many years but success in this competition had eluded him until now. Indeed he is the first Drimarone man in the winners enclosure since this tournament began in 2011. Joseph beat Shane McNulty from Mountcharles in the final.
Overall the tournament was again well supported with 60 throwers entering the competition and a large audience in attendance. The main organiser, Frankie Greene thanked all those who helped out on the day as this annual event continues to go from strength to strength. Indeed, it was remarked how many young throwers were involved this year and fitting too that a 19 year old was the eventual winner.
Thanks goes to the main sponsors O Neills Bar and also to Frankie Greene Plumbing, The Village Tavern, The Lazy Bush, Donegal Plumbing & Heating, Donegal Town Hardware, Clasic Hardware, Mohans Bar, Letterbarrow Construction and Nigel Graham Carpentry for their generous sponsorship. Finally thanks also to Fergus Meehan who kindly donated a - shirt signed by many of the world’s top names in darts for the raffle. See you all again in 2016.
