2010/11 league champions, Cookstown, travelled to Raphoe on Saturday for the 2nd game of the new premier league season. Raphoe having picked up a point the previous week vs Kilkeel where hopeful to pinch another one this week.
Midway through the half Cookstown took the lead with Andy Barber getting his first of the game from a drag flick which was initially saved by Rankin but the rebound falling generously for the cookstown man to tuck away.
Raphoe, however kept pushing forward in search of a goal, Matthew Lecky coming close from a couple of good short corner routines, with the help of Alan Meehan and Gavin Lecky, but got denied each time by Hughes in goals. Raphoe then found themselves winning a penalty stroke, when Lecky was fouled from behind when through on goal. Raphoe supporters bewildered as to why no cards shown by the umpires and things got even worse when Hughes saved Alan Meehan’s resulting penalty flick.
Cookstown shortly after doubled there lead through another Andy Barber goal after a goalmouth scramble.
Raphoe continued to play some good hockey in the second half, with Ian McGonigle working tirelessly in midfield but unfortunately found themselves 3-0 down from another short corner, the ball needlessly given away in midfield and with Raphoe caught on the break, Cookstown eased their way towards the Raphoe goal, winning and scoring the resulting short corner.
Cookstown then put the game to bed with the goal of the game, a well worked short corner routine gave Barber his 3rd goal of the game and Cookstown fourth. Raphoe did eventually get their goal, but all a little to late, good work by Richard Patterson and Simon Goudie who fed Gavin Lecky for a deflected shot on goal finally beating Hughes.
