Ramelton woman Mairead Coyle getting ready to take on the world

Ramelton Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner, Mairead Coyle, is getting ready to take part in the world championships in California this week.

Mairead, who is a seasoned international competitor, will compete in the blue belt rooster weight division.

She trains out of the Rilion Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy in Oldtown, Letterkenny, under the instruction of her brother Brian “Barney” Coyle and will compete under the “Gracie Elite Team” banner at the tournament.

In preparation for her bid on the world title she enlisted the help of former world champion Yasmine “Yas” Wilson from Buckinghamshire in the UK.

Yas, a black belt under the legendary Roger Gracie, is a former brown belt world champion travelled to Donegal last week to host a seminar for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) enthusiasts from across the north west including, Letterkenny, Derry, Donegal Town and Sligo.

On Saturday she led a three hour training session focusing on a variety of sparring methods and spent time helping everyone improve their technique.

On Sunday she and Mairead spent more time practicing ahead of the world championships, which they will both compete in, that take place in Long Beach, California, from June 1 to 5.

Mairead has competed at many international events over the last number of years and recently won gold at the Irish BJJ Open in Dublin.X
