There was deep regret over a wide area with the recent death of one of our most popular and well respected citizens, Ms. Sheila Sharkey.
Aged 85 years, she passed away after a short illness in Letterkenny University Hospital.
A native of Achill, Co. Mayo, she was a member of the well known Cafferkey family in that area. She was predeceased by her husband Jim over twenty years ago.
In her youth, she emigrated to England to train as a nurse. While there she met Jim. He later moved to the U.S.A and Sheila later joined him there, where they married. They returned to this area in the seventies, where they lived in the old family home and later in a new county council house adjacent to it.
There was always a special welcome to all callers in the Sharkey household. Both Jim and Sheila had a great love of music as Jim was a well known accordion player and Sheila a noted singer. Friends calling to the house were often treated to ceili's.
Sheila was a very prominent member of Cursillo and one of the longest serving members of Acres Church Choir. Both the Leifin and her native Achill will be the poorer for her passing. Her funeral took place to Belcruit Cemetery following mass in St. Columba's Church, Acres, celebrated by Rev. Fr. Pat Ward P.P, assisted by Rev. Fr. Matt McInerny.
Readers at the mass were Mary Shevlin and Kieran O'Donnell. Music was by her colleagues in Acres Church Choir, who also formed a guard of honour, as a mark of respect to her.
At the end of the mass her niece Anne Marie read a reflection and thanked all for their kindness towards her aunt, in particular her neighbours, Mary Shevlin, Joe and Mary Rodgers and family.
She is survived by her sisters Ms. Brigid Kennedy, Coventry, Ms. Margaret Ferguson, Achill and Ms. Mary O'Connor, Achill, nieces, nephews and family circle to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
