D-Day hero honoured by France

A man who spent practically all his working life in Ballyshannon has received the most prestigious award that the French Government can bestow on an individual for military and civil merits.
Duncan Foster spent most of his life in Ballyshannon where he was a respected optician serving a clientele from all over the North West.
He was recently awarded the Legion d’honneur at a ceremony in his home town in Kinross in Scotland for his heroic actions on the beaches of Normandy in 1944.
The prestigious medal was pinned to the 95-year-old's chest by the Consul General of France, Emmanuel Cocher, in the company of his family and friends.
His daughter Aileen, who lives in Ballintra, said: “Dad was a very humble man and did not speak much about the war or his part in the fall of Hitler.”
