Former Donegal TD Blaney fails in Seanad bid

Niall Blaney

Former Donegal TD Niall Blaney has failed in a bid to win a seat in the Seanad.

The former Donegal North East Fianna Fáil TD fought elections for two seats vacated by Labour’s Denis Landy and Sinn Féin’s Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Former Ulster Farmers’ Union president Ian Marshall topped the poll.

The second seat was won by the former Fine Gael Kildare North TD Anthony Lawlor.

Mr Lawlor was elected on the first count 103,000 votes ahead of Niall Blaney who received 86,000 votes.

Mr Blaney served as a TD for Donegal North-East from 2002 to 2011, but stood down before the 2011 general election.
