A major refurbishment plan has been approved for the total refurbishment of Donegal town Garda Station with work due to commence in the new year.

The project is part of An Garda Siochana's Building and Refurbishment programme which will include over €60 million of Exchequer funding.

The refurbishment of stations/facilities is expected to include facilities for meeting victims of crime;

· Essential remedial works to existing stations;

· Development of large scale Property and Exhibit Management Stores;

· Upgrade of cells and provision of improved Custody Management Facilities.

The project in Donegal Town will take place on the existing site on Quay Street and will be double the size of the existing facility.

Gardaí in Donegal Town are delighted that this is now finally coming to fruition with one member commenting, “This station has served us well and we are happy that the new facility will have the same location.

“The Garda Station here has a long history and many local people still remember the days when the local Sergeant and his family used to live on the premises.

“Recently an elderly lady visited the station and told us that she had been born here and wanted to have a look around.'

“The new facility will enable us to enhance the service we provide to the public in supporting victims of crime and also investigating crime.”

Rhatigan Architects have been appointed as the design team for the project which commences in 2017.
