Donegal circuirt court judge unhappy with long list

Judge John O'Hagan

A circuit court judge has complained about the large of number cases listed before him at Letterkenny Circuit Court.

Judge John O’Hagan made the comments at the opening day of the circuit court in Letterkenny where he said he had 121 cases listed before him.

The list includes criminal cases, personal injury cases, infant rulings and equity actions.

“I can’t do it,” he said. “ It is not physically possible.”

The judge said he had asked the courts service to look at the matter.

“I sit in this courthouse every time I come up here to eight o’clock at night, but the waves keep coming, like a tsunami,” he said.

Judge O'Hagan said he had previously asked for civil cases from Letterkenny to be moved into Buncrana.

He said that while Buncrana court house has a small court room, it has plenty of consultation rooms and is only half an hour from Letterkenny.

That would leave Letterkenny circuit court for licensing cases, civil cases and some equity cases, he said.

“There is a solution and Buncrana is the solution,” he said.
