Veteran broadcaster, Tommie Gorman of RTÉ recently launched the HSE's Flu Vaccine campaign in Ballyshannon.
At the event in An Clochar, Health Campus, he spoke of the importance of being vaccinated. "For several years the Flu Vaccine service has helped to keep people like me alive and healthy. I have what’s described as a chronic illness and I am one of the many people who are strongly advised to get the Flu Vaccine jab. So, for obvious reasons I am delighted to be involved in the launch of this energetic campaign in our region. Seeing is believing - at the launch, here in Ballyshannon, I’m availing of the opportunity to get my injection.”
An HSE spokesperson explained that flu can be a very serious and sometimes deadly disease, with potentially 1,000 flu related deaths in Ireland during a severe flu season.
Older people, those who have a chronic illness, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women are especially advised to avail of the vaccine at the start of each winter.
“Seasonal flu vaccine can be given at any stage of pregnancy and also protects the baby,” the spokesperson added.
“The flu vaccine cannot give you the flu as it does not contain any live flu virus and all those at risk should get vaccinated as soon as possible this year to make sure that they are protected.”
