Work is to begin on a plan for Donegal islands that was described as an achievable action list.

Members of the council’s Islands Committee have been seeking a plan to be developed in consultation with island representatives.

At Tuesday’s committee meeing, Máirín Uí Fhearraigh of Comharchumann na nOileán Beag said with islands now asked to submit applications for Leader funds, “this is the time to plan”.

Michael McGarvey, Glenties area manager, said the council, Údarás na Gaeltachta and other offices will work on a focused list of priorities for localities in a process that will include listening “to what communities want, what parishes want and what islands want”.

He said council met with Údarás to determine how the plans can be developed and said it would likely be later this year or early 2017 when the process begins. He said they were not planning a wide-ranging programme, but an achievable action list.

Cllr. Marie Therese Gallagher, Glenties cathaoirleach, acknowledged a “lapse in communication” since the proposal for the work was agreed in June, but said she was hopeful that once engagement began, the plan could progress within a short time frame.
