A poignant and inspirational reunion took place last week in Bundoran’s Great Northern Hotel when after nine years two people were reunited at a fashion fundraising event.
Scarlett Kerins from Kinlough was born nine years ago but soon developed a very serious condition in her infancy.
“After a few days she started to lose the colour in her face and had great difficulty in breathing - we knew that if we didn’t do something we would have lost her,” her father Leonard said.
“We called the ambulance immediately and Scarlett was immediately rushed to Sligo University Hospital where she remained for over a fortnight.
“She was suffering from severe reflux and the contents of her stomach were blocking her airwaves. Time was not on our side.
“The arrival of that ambulance was a life-changing moment for us and the very man in that ambulance is up there on the catwalk tonight - Operation Transformation’s Cathal Gallagher.”
The charity event was the first time Scarlett and Cathal had met since the Ballyshannon man had brought her to hospital.
After the fashion show Cathal met the now healthy young lady whose life he had helped to save.
It was a very joyful encounter for the Kerins family and the Gallaghers.
“I find the whole thing simply unbelievable when I think of the different circumstances that made this happen tonight,” Cathal said.
“Somebody is looking down at us from above. When you think that we are only living a few miles apart but have never met it is simply amazing.
“I won’t pretend to remember every call out that I have made but I will certainly remember this one now. It is just a miracle - from a struggling little baby to a now healthy young lady with great curls. Scarlett is certainly an inspiration.”
