After suffering a poor string of results, Harps travelled to Dublin with hopes of opening a gap between themselves and UCD at the bottom, but the outcome was the opposite.
UCD controlled the game and although it took them until the 61st minute to get the opening goal, they were full value for the win at the end.
There will be some soul searching by Finn Harps after this game as they need to get back on the rails pretty quickly or they will be cut adrift at the bottom.
Ollie Horgan brought back John Kavanagh into the starting line-up for this bottom of the table clash but it was UCD that had the best of things in the opening minutes.
They had a number of chances with the best falling to Kevin Coffey, who blasted wide.
Keith Cowan almost got on the end of a Caolan McAleer long range free kick but again it was UCD who continued to create the better chances and Harps were lucky when Richie O'Farrell was denied by a post.
The sides traded corners and after great play by Harry Ashcroft on the right, beating two players, before pulling the ball back to the edge of the box but Caolan McAleer can’t keep his shot down.
Eight minutes from the break Sean Boyd’s attempt to thread a pass through is blocked, but the ball comes back to him and his shot is saved.
Just before half-time UCD forced three corners in-a-row but the Harps defence stood strong and it remained 0-0 at the break.
Shortly after the break Caolan McAleer brought a save out of Conor Kearns while Gary O'Neill hit the Harps crossbar with a rasper free kick.
The Students got the breakthrough goal on 61 minutes when Timmy Molloy collected a cross. His first effort is saved by Ciaran Gallagher but Molloy reacts quickly to smash home from close range.
Cretaro went close to getting an equaliser for Harps but UCD doubled their lead ten minutes later when after some lovely play. Richie O'Farrell found Gary O'Neill, who deceived the Harps defence with a dummy and returned to O'Farrell who finished past Gallagher in the corner to give Finn Harps a real uphill task.
Any chance of a comeback was quickly quashed as Richie O'Farrell struck again for the Students on 83 minutes. The centre-forward's initial effort was blocked but the rebound fell kindly for him and he smashed it home from 10 yards to seal the win and take UCD off the bottom of the table.
