A cross-border investigation has been launched after the local pharmacy in Newtowncunningham was broken into overnight.
The robbery is believed to have happened between 3am and 4am.
It is understood that a jeep was used to ram the front of the building causing extensive damage.
Two tills and a quantity of goods have been stolen.
The property has been sealed off with gardaí carrying out a forensic examination this morning and CCTV is also being assessed.
Crime Prevention Officer, Paul Wallace, said that contingency plans are being put in place so that people who need to access ordinary prescriptions can do so.
He added that this was an attack on rural communities, once again, and said that he hoped that pharmacies would not be subject to target.
Gardaí are asking anyone who may have seen a silver Mercedes jeep in the early hours of this morning to contact gardaí.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074 93 20540.
