Both projects are currently out to tender and it is hoped work will commence on both in August and will be completed in 2019.

The Dungloe upgrade will consist of refurbishment of the existing residential unit including maximising single and double room occupancy.

The existing sanitary accommodation will be replanned and upgraded, enhancing accessibility for the patients and visitors.

The works will be carried out in a number of phases. And the construction period is expected to be 12 months and the whole project  is estimated to cost in the region of €1,700,000.

The Carndonagh upgrade will consist of refurbishment and extension of the existing residential unit including maximising single and double room occupancy, re-planning and upgrading sanitary accommodation, enhancing accessibility for patients and visitors and providing an extended day room and dining room for patients, with a residents garden area also included.

The works will be carried out in a number of phases. And again to maximise the bed capacity locally during the Carndonagh construction phase, additional wards will be created in Buncrana Community Nursing Unit for the duration of the works.

The estimated cost of the Carndonagh is in the region of €2,500,000 and the  construction period is expected to be approximately 15 months.

All of the upgrading works will ensure we continue to comply with HIQA standards.  Improvements with regards to infection control, energy efficiency and fabric upgrade will be included in the works. Patients and staff will also be consulted with regards to the upgrading works.  It is hoped that work will begin in both Dungloe and Carndonagh, in August.

The HSE in the statement have also confirmed new nursing staff have also being appointed to the county’s Community Hospitals. .

Seven staff  nurses have recently accepted post and are awaiting Garda vetting clearance before they commence.

This is in addition to eight  new staff nurses (RGN) that have commenced employment  in a number of the county’s Community Hospitals, since last September.

And as a result of those appointments nine new beds have been added since last December.

Planned upgrades for Buncrana and Falcarragh Community Hospital will commence once Dungloe and Carndonagh are completed and subject to funding being in place.
