New traffic proposals for Killybegs following public meeting

A street close to a Killybegs school could be made one-way after proposals were discussed at a public meeting on traffic issues in the town.

Over 50 people attended the meeting which was hosted by the town's regeneration group.

Six proposals on various issues including traffic flow were presented by council officials on maps before the meeting.

The meeting was called following ongoing concerns that the traffic flow in the town centre is not helping some local businesses.

Local people believe the closure of businesses on the main street is down to the one-way system there.

The meeting is part of the process of preparing the town for potential funding from the  Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

The comments from the meeting will be turned into proposals which will be brought back to the public for further consultation.

Cllr Niamh Kennedy said the meeting was a positive step in helping to solve some of the problems in the town.

“We are going to take all the comments and analysis them and come back for further consultation with proposals based on what people are saying,” she said.

Bridge Street, which is close to Niall Mór National School, was a major taking point.

“Obviously they will be conflicting on some issues but no one was in doubt that Bridge Street needs to be one-way for traffic management and the safety of pedestrians. It’s too narrow for two-way and if there are cars parked on it it is very difficult.”

Cllr Kennedy said the other issue that was a major talking point was parking.

“The biggest point of concern seems to be that employees of local businesses are blocking spaces and that is preventing some local businesses getting customers in. So there is a need there to encourage employees who are parking between 9 and 6 to park somewhere else, in outer locations.”
