Donegal County Council is to honour the former rugby international Nora Stapleton with a civic reception.

The Inishowen native won two Six Nations titles and a Grand Slam during her career.

Cllr Jack Murray told today’s meeting of Donegal County Council that Ms Stapleton is one of the most accomplished sporting figures the country has produced. She excelled in football, camogie, and handball as well as rugby, he said.

The motion to honour her was passed and details of the civic reception will be released at a later date.

Nora Stapleton retired from international rugby last summer after winning 50 caps.

The fly-half made her debut against Italy in the 2010 Six Nations and made her final appearance for Ireland in the Women's Rugby World Cup game against Wales in Belfast last August.
