A local councillor has reassured residents in Letterkenny that gardai are investigating claims that a paedophile is living in the community.
The claims were made in letters distributed door to door on Tuesday of this week.
Letters were delivered to around a dozen houses. One letter, running to three pages, outlined information that alleged a paedophile is living in the area. Local councillor Gerry McMonagle said another letter claimed fraudsters were living in the area.
Cllr. McMonagle said he has spoken to gardaí and he is happy that the matter is being taken seriously.
“The gardaí are aware of it and are investigating it,” he said.
“If people have information it should have been taken to the gardaí to allow them to investigate it. Instead they have created fear and concern in a local community that may or may not be warranted. If people had those concerns they should have allowed gardaí to investigate it and take whatever action is necessary to protect people.”
