A Letterkenny business owner says the kind act of a stranger who returned over €3,000 his family had misplaced has helped them to keep their business open ahead of Christmas.

Malachy Canning, who runs Gourmet Foods on Oldtown Road in Letterkenny, has been speaking about how his wife, Julie, had inadvertently forgotten her handbag on a trolley at the Aldi Supermarket in Gortlee, which contained over €3,000, intended to be used as their son's college accommodation payment.

He explained that, when she realised what had happened, she immediately returned to the store to find the bag was gone but, after enquiring with staff, she was told it had been handed in.

Now the family want to find out who the good Samaritan was and to treat him to a Christmas dinner like no other.

“We would just love to get in touch with him and thank him,” said Malachy.
