NWO at An Grianán with Die Fledermaus

North West Opera brings Die Fledermaus to An Grianán Theatre in Letterkenny on November 4th and 5th, with a cast of internationally known professionals and local amateur performers

North West Opera will perform Die Fledermaus, a lively comedy set to the sumptuous music of Johann Strauss, at An Grianán Theatre next week.

The production comes to Letterkenny’s An Grianán on November 4th and 5th. The opera will be sung in English by professional leads, accompanied by full orchestra and chorus, giving the audience a totally live opera experience.

“The genius of this work is that Johann Strauss combines a hilarious plot based on a French farce with fabulous music that people will instantly recognise - it’s such an entertaining show,” Ann Jennings, NWO director/producer said.

“In Vienna it is traditionally performed at New Year and is a national institution - you would struggle to get a ticket,” she said. “So here the chance to see this great show right on your doorstep.”

The light-hearted story follows 24 hours in the lives of a group of Viennese bourgeoisie and centres on an elaborate plan for revenge. Disguises, hoaxes and much flirtation – fuelled by copious amounts of champagne – bring comical results.

Ann said NWO is delighted to be working with talented local and international performers.

“The director, Deigh Reid, really understands the work and is doing a great job exploiting the comedy of the show,” she said. “The conductor and musical director, Anton Zapf, knows the operetta inside and out. His experience is second to none and he will inspire a great performance from all the soloists, orchestra and chorus.”

Pianist Mairead Hurley arrived in Donegal earlier this week for a return to the NWO stage. She worked with NWO on their successful Summer Opera Gala concert series at Glenveagh National Park.

Mairead also previously served as head of music at Opera Ireland for 12 years, stepping down in 2010. She has a repertoire of more than 70 operas to date, and has worked with every opera company in Ireland.

Ann said it was, “an absolute thrill and fabulous opportunity” for the NWO chorus to work alongside an artist of Mairead’s credentials and experience.

Composer Johann Strauss became known as The Waltz King due to his immensly popular compositions, among them the Blue Danube Waltz and the Emperor Waltz.

Ann Jennings founded NWO in 2008 after such successful shows as Duelling Divas in the Balor Arts Centre, Ballybofey, and a special performance of Mozart’s Magic Flute at An Grianán.

In the years since, NWO has performed Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Puccini’s La Boheme and Bizet’s Carmen, among other classic operas. The aim of the company is to make opera accessible and enjoyable, and a hallmark of NWO productions has been the inclusion of internationally known professionals with local amateur singers.

Tickets can be booked at An Grianán box office, 074 912 0777.
