Donegal County Council has gone to tender for one of the most long awaited infrastructure projects in the county.
The council is inviting tenders for the construction of a new concrete bridge at Cockhill, Buncrana.
The scheme will entail the construction of a new 38m single span bridge over the Crana river to accommodate the realigned R238m which joins Buncrana and Clonmany and Carndonagh.
The government awarded €3m last year for the project after a campaign by locals stretching back 65 years. The sod was turned on the project in July.
It is hoped the bridge will be open before the end of next year.
The need for a new bridge led to protests by locals who were concerned about the danger of the existing bridge.
The council says precast pre-stressed concrete beams with a reinforced concrete deck slab will form the superstructure.
The deadline for tenders is November 16th.
