Former TD Pádraig MacLochlainn TD (SF) has topped the poll for the Seanad Industrial and Commercial panel.
The Buncrana man lost out in the last general election, when Thomas Pringle (Ind) took the fifth seat in Donegal.
MacLochlainn secured 114,000 votes for the Seanad panel today, however. He comfortably exceeded the 112,401 quota and was the first person deemed elected to the nine member panel.
The newly elected senator said he was "delighted" and vowed to continue his "fight against the neglect of Donegal and rural Ireland".
He also pledged to work towards a focused plan of investment and job creation for Donegal and outlined what he believes is needed for that. In addition, he said he will fight to reverse "years of government neglect" in infrastructure and to improve health services.
After the seventh count for the Industrial and Commercial panel this afternoon, businessman Peter Casey looked set to be the next candidate eliminated, at 13,000 votes. Former TD Niall Blaney (FF), in 11th place at 34,000 votes, was still in with a chance, provided transfers were to go his way.
