Malin hung on for a hard earned point on the road to Gaoth Dobhair in Magheragallon yesterday.

Gaoth Dobhair 1-11

Malin 2-08

A fourteen man Gaoth Dobhair almost stole a late win in the dying seconds of the game but had a battle on their hands as Malin’s doggedness almost took victory.

Playing with a strong breeze in the first half it was Malin who opened the scoring with a Declan Walsh point in the second minute.

Gaoth Dobhair enjoyed long spells of possession and replied with three points from Odhran McNiallais and two frees from Padraig McGarvey. In the 14th minute Malin’s Anthony Kelly made it 0-3 to 0-2 from play before teammate Brendan McLaughlin hit the game’s first goal in the 15th.

Kelly added another quickly followed by Declan Walsh’s point putting them ahead 1-04 to 0-03 with 17 minutes gone. In the 26th minute Peter McGee quickly found himself in a situation where he was yellow and black carded resulting in his side having to complete the game with only 14 men. Two McGarvey frees saw the half end Gaoth Dobhair 0-5 to 1-4.

Anthony Kelly opened with a point before Brendan McLaughlin got his second goal with a powerful shot off the turf in the fifth minute. Substitute Jamie Boyle responded with a home point. Charlie Byrne pointed for Malin. Blair hit a score before limping off injured but sub Noel Kelly proved a revelation. His first action was to win a free pointed by McGarvey in the 15th minute. He followed this with a free off the ground that found the back of the net and in the 19th minute tapped over a fine point. Matthew Byrne responded with two for Malin. McGarvey’s boot tapped a free and was followed by a monster point from Odhran McNiallais in the 32nd minute to pull level at 1-11 to 2-08.

Malin held possession for all they were worth but conceded a sideline ball in their own half. Kevin Cassidy was advised it would be the last kick of the game. Just as his shot fell short the final whistle went, within a split second of a Gaoth Dobhair fist meeting the ball and it was only parried off the post and crossed the goal line, but alas it was too late to change the score line.
