Donegal manager Jim McGuinness has announced his starting team for this Sunday’s opening Allianz League clash with Laois.
The game will see the return of Martin McElhinney and the McHugh brothers, after they were involved with the colleges during January.
McElhinney will partner Rory Kavanagh at midfield while the McHugh brothers, Ryan and Mark, will play at corner back and half-forward respectively.
Christy Toye, who missed the whole of 2013 with a virus, and was introduced as a replacement off the bench and scored a point against Queen’s University in the last round of the Dr McKenna Cup, is back in the substitutes,. The St Michael’s man has been showing well in training in recent weeks.
”Christy has been going really well in training and did well when he came on against Queen’s. Unfortunately, he picked up a bit of a thigh strain last week in training which has hampered him a little, but we will know his situation better after training tonight (Tuesday). But we are hopeful he will be fit,” Jim McGuinness told the Democrat.
“Karl Lacey and Frank McGlynn are fit again too and are in the running for a start on Sunday. But unfortunately we are definitely without Neil Gallagher and David Walsh. The both suffered hamstring strains in training on Sunday morning are definitely out and will not feature. Frank McGlynn is fit again too and is good to go.”
Sunday’s game is the first of Donegal’s seven games in Division 2, with three at home and four away. The away games are Laois, Galway, Down and Armagh with Ulster champions Monaghan, Meath and Louth at home.
The Donegal team for Laois is: Paul Durcan; Karl Lacey, Neil McGee, Ryan McHugh; Frank McGlynn, Leo McLoone, Anthony Thompson; Rory Kavanagh, Martin McElhinney; Mark McHugh, Dermot Molloy, Odhran McNiallais; Colm McFadden, Michael Murphy, Darach O’Connor. Subs., Michael Boyle, Christy Toye, Declan Walsh, Eamonn Doherty, Gary McFadden, Hugh McFadden, Leon Thompson, Luke Keaney, Martin O’Reilly, Matthew Smyth, Patrick McBrearty.
