Letterkenny Institute of Technology defeated University College Cork’s second string at Athlone IT in the Division One play-off quarter-finals on Tuesday.
Letterkenny Institute of Technology 1
University College Cork 0
The win means that the side managed by Niall McGonagle now must travel to Belfield to take on University College Dublin’s reserves in the next fortnight.
Against UCC, LyIT won a tight affair by a single goal, which was scored by Shannon McDonald on 15 minutes after she was assisted by midfield partner Claire Faulkner.
The opening goal was always going to be important on a day when both defences dominated. LyIT sat in but did carry an element of danger on the break, particularly from Denis Doherty on the wing.
The longer the match went on, the more LyIT were willing to preserve what they had and Aine Higgins was seldom troubled thanks to an excellent defensive performance from the likes of Charmaine McDermott at sweeper.
LyIT: Aine Higgins; Nicole Bryson (Megan Doherty 50), Charmaine McDermott, Norrell Nicholas, Bridgeen McLaughlin; Denise Doherty, Shannon McDonald, Sarah Faulkner, Orla Farren; Jennifer O’Reilly, Rebekah Mooney.
