The Letterkenny IT hurlers have reached the Irish Daily Mail HE GAA Corn Padraig Mac Diarmada 2014 Championship Final after defeating University of Ulster Magee in a thriller at O’Donnell Park, Letterkenny.
Magee College 3-17
Magee started at a furious pace racing into an eight point lead within ten minutes of the start. LYIT slowly started to improve but they were 11 points down at half time with a scoreline Magee 2-9 to LYIT 0-4.
The second half was a different story as the LYIT lads tore into Magee, dominating the play and slowly closing the gap and then leveling the score with five minutes to go.
LYIT then took the lead for the first time on 60 minutes only for Magee to score a heavily disputed point two minutes into injury time with the last puck of normal time.
Both teams had to regroup and go at it again in extra time. The first half of extra-time was a very close affair with Magee ahead by one point. However on the restart the Letterkenny lads quickly levelled and then went four points up.
Magee tried hard and never gave up but couldn’t get the crucial scores with lads on both teams tiring badly. There was little difference between the teams in skill but on the day Letterkenny just wanted the win more.
Well done to the LYIT Hurlers.
LYIT play the Hurling final on Friday 28th February at 1.30pm in the Dub Playing facilities Queen’s University, Belfast.
