In the thirdrd phase of competition in the Higher Education GAA League, LyIT played host to University of Ulster Magee in O’Donnell Park , Letterkenny.
The game was played as a 13-a-side due to shortages on the UUM side. The opening exchanges certainly fell in favour of Letterkenny who found their scores with ease and were 2-3 to 0-1 after only nine minutes on the stopwatch.
Both goals came courtesy of Annette Pearson with a third goal converted by Aine Higgins on 26 minutes. Efficient defending from Sarah Faulkner, Alannah Sweeney and Leah Kerrigan ensured that the opposition was limited in their scoring until the interval.
The second half of the game started in difficult conditions for both teams and UUM made good on a few attacks converting three consecutive points. Settling into the contest once again, clever play from midfielders Cathy DeWard and Vanessa O’Rourke helped Aine Higgins and Aine Fagan to take their share of points to give Letterkenny the winning margin in this the third of the league games to be played before the break coming up in December.
Refeee Joe O’Donnell was happy to blow the game up on 60 minutes as the conditions worsened; a final score of 3-11 to 1-4 was his official score record for the game and not many could argue with Letterkenny being the deserved winners given the efforts of the entire team. Recognition should also go the Karen Feeney, Letterkenny team Physio who worked on a few of the key players for LyIT ensuring a trouble free return to the changing rooms after a well executed performance.
