Speaking following the European Agriculture and Rural Development Committee hearing into the appointment of Phil Hogan as Commissioner for Agriculture, Matt Carthy MEP said.
“Sinn Féin has consistently questioned the suitability of Phil Hogan as the Commissioner for Agriculture given his track record as a Minister for the Environment in the Irish Government.
“Throughout the process of selection Phil Hogan has issued threats of legal action and today failed to answer the questions put to him.
“Rural communities, farmers and the agri-food section expect more from a commissioner designate than spin. A commissioner designate cannot dodge the difficult questions or set aside parliamentary accountability.
“Following this morning’s performance from Phil Hogan we remain of the view he is not suited to being the Agriculture Commissioner.”
