Letterkenny’s Cathedral Quarter committee is making an appeal to local businesses and members of the public for donations to fund a Mosaic Mural of the Cathedral Quarter group logo.
The Cathedral Quarter logo was designed by Mary Faughnan of Full Stop Comma! and the committee commissioned Irish mosaic artist Macola Vonga to bring the mural to life.
The Donegal Local Development Company funded materials for the logo under the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) and now requires donations from local businesses and members of the public to fund the commissioning of the piece.
Over the last number of months, Letterkenny town has had new town maps designed and the Cathedral Quarter area now features in the map, making it a prime stop for tourists.
The new mosaic mural of the group’s logo will be displayed at the side of the former Patrick Gildea Hairdressing unit on the Church Lane and the mural will define the Cathedral Quarter area of historical, cultural and artistic importance.
Commenting on the new mosaic mural, secretary Donnan Harvey said, “We’re very excited about the new mosaic mural and we’re hoping to officially unveil the specially commissioned piece at Culture Night on Friday, 25th September.
“Obviously, we were delighted to receive the SICAP to help fund the piece but we really need the help and support of local businesses and member of the Diaspora to fund the actual work. Every donation would be greatly appreciated, no matter how big or small. We’re continuing our work with the Cathedral Quarter and we can see that things are really improving day-by-day.”
The Cathedral Quarter originally began as the Save the Church Lane campaign. Since its formation in 2014, the project has gathered significant momentum in its efforts to regenerate the historical Church Lane. The long term goal is to create a hidden treasure in the heart of Letterkenny for locals and tourists to enjoy.
